Tips for First Time Moms
Being a first time mom can be very overwhelming. Here you have this little bundle of joy that wakes you up at all hours of the night, makes lots of stinky messes and of course can’t tell you why he is crying. Trust me things do get better and he will not always be unable to talk and go to the bathroom in a diaper. Until them here are some tips to help you get through this stage in your motherhood with your sanity still intact.
Learn Your Baby’s Cries
For the most past you as a mother will learn what the different tones and pitches of your new baby’s cries mean. Most babies have a different cry when they are hungry verse when they are wet and need a diaper change. You will learn these as time goes on and it will become second nature to feed them with one cry and change them with another.
Always Carry Extra Supplies
Be proud of your full diaper bag and carry it everywhere. In the diaper bag you should carry at least on change of clothes for your baby including an under shirt and a full outfit or pajamas. You never know when the diaper will leak, the bottle will leak or when the baby with vomit. You should also carry plenty of diapers. Even if you only plan to be gone for a small amount of time many times that will turn into a longer stay and you will need more diapers. Carry extra formula, you never know when the baby will all of a sudden in the middle of the store be hungry. Wipes and diaper cream should also have a home in your diaper bag. While many places are equipped with a changing table in the restrooms some establishments are still behind the times. Carry an extra blanket you can put on the floor just in case.
Try to Stick to a Schedule
Although your baby is still new you need to try to develop a schedule. This will help your baby to become a little more predictable and save your sanity. If you know that the baby naps from a certain time to a certain time try to avoid making plans or appointments during those times. A tired baby is no fun in these situations. If you have an idea of when the baby will be hungry you can avoid being somewhere that makes it difficult to feed him.
Take Time for You
This is one of the most important tips I can give to a first time mom. Although being a mom comes first you need to remember that you are still a person along with being a mom. Take a little time every day whether it be during your baby’s nap time or at night before you go to bed to do something you enjoy that is just for you. Spend time with other adults as often as possible and although your new baby makes for great conversation make sure you have more than just that to talk about.
Being a first time mom is a job within itself. You will find as your baby grows from an infant into a toddler, on to an elementary age, into their teens and then becomes an adult that it is by far the most rewarding and satisfying job you will ever have in your life.
