Tips for Raising Children to Have High Self Esteem
Children in today’s society need all the help they can from parents and other adults in their lives to have high self esteem. Some parents are at a lose as to what will help them to raise their children with high self esteem and in return that will help them not only to succeed but also to be confident in themselves. Here are some tips to help parents along the way to assist their child in gaining the high self esteem they will need through out life.
Praise Your Child Often For Things They Do Correctly
Praise builds self esteem because the child knows that they accomplished something and you the parent noticed it. Even if your child doesn’t win the competition or get straight A’s in school make sure you recognize their attempts and effort. For a child to progress and move forward they need to be reassured that their effort is not in vain.
Praise Before Negativity
You should never start a conversation or statement with a negative. This will only hurt your child and his self esteem even if you end it with a positive. He will already be crushed so the positive isn’t even important to him. For instance if your child’s report card comes him with 3 good grades and three bad grades you need to praise the good grades first. Then discuss how you can improve the bad grades.
Discipline Will Add To Self Esteem
While children will act as though they hate to be told no or not at this time it really does add to their high self esteem. Knowing that you care is important to high self esteem. Discipline with love and your child will reap the rewards.
Accept and Love Your Child For Who He Is
While your child may not be the football star you hope he would be or the singer you wanted her to be they are still your children. Love and accept them for exactly who they are. Children will endure enough ridicule and hard times outside of your home and love. Make sure that while they are home and in your presence that they are made to feel all the love you have for them and also that they feel like they belong.
Children have a hard time in situations with other children. Kids can be so cruel but by making sure your child feels your love, is praised often for their efforts your child will be raised with high self esteem.
